Amazon Blurb:

When a spell gone wrong shatters Snow White’s enchanted mirror, a demon escapes into the world. The demon’s magic distorts the vision of all it touches, showing them only ugliness and hate. It is a power that turns even friends and lovers into mortal foes, one that will threaten humans and fairies alike.

“Fairy politics is a maze of bargains, oaths, and obligations.”
“And the wise ruler seeks not to escape the maze, but to rule it from its heart.”

This is the book I wanted from the start of the series. By far the best. This was great. This spoke to my heart. But, this is very different in tone than the start of the series. It wasn’t even a gradual shift, though Red Hood’s Revenge was closer in tone than the first two. This book feels out of nowhere compared to the rest. Was it worth it to read the whole series to read this book? I would say not really. Is it worth it to read just this book and ignore the first three? I would say go for it.

This was a dark book. This was a fairytale. Hard questions were asked, that only presented hard choices, leading to hard decisions. The light at the end of the tunnel was but a dim speck. People were cruel and indifferent, they looked after themselves. Bad things happened. This was my kind of fairytale.

The magic and world changes under us this book. Not substantially. But, in a very totally real sort of way. The way things go in fairytales. It made this book, honestly. I wasn’t expecting the change, quite frankly, and I’m happier that it happened.

The threads of the series were pulled together by the end of The Snow Queen’s Shadow. Hines could have easily continued. After all, life is change, and change and a happily ever after are at odds. However, Hines made a good choice of ending it how he did. It was solid. Everyone, even if it isn’t the ending you hoped for them, were settled at the end. It may not have been totally happy, but it was a normal type of happy. It was good.

I really enjoyed this book. I’m glad I read it.
