Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s sensual and painfully beautiful Guild Hunter world in her new novel of sacrifice, loyalty, and the choices of love that can shatter the heart.
In the wake of a brutal war, the archangel Raphael and his hunter consort, Elena, are dealing with the treacherously shifting tides of archangelic politics and the people of a battered but not broken city. The last thing their city needs is more death, especially a death that bears the eerie signature of an insane enemy archangel who cannot—should not—be walking the streets.
This hunt must be undertaken with stealth and without alerting their people. It must be handled by those who can become shadows themselves…
Ash is a gifted tracker and a woman cursed with the ability to sense the secrets of anyone she touches. But there’s one man she knows all too well without a single instant of skin contact: Janvier, the dangerously sexy Cajun vampire who has fascinated and infuriated her for years. Now, as they track down a merciless killer, their cat-and-mouse game of flirtation and provocation has turned into a profound one of the heart. And this time, it is Ash’s secret, dark and terrible, that threatens to destroy them both.
“I told Caliane that trying to civilize me is like trying to civilize a jungle cat,” Naasir said with a shrug. “We pretend to like people until we get hungry and want fresh meat.”
I loved Archangel’s Shadows so damn much. Mostly because I adore the characters so much. This is another book away from Raphael and Elena, which always hurts me. Yet I didn’t miss them so much, having Ash and Janvier around. I just love this pair.
Janvier is a badass Cajun and is the least broken character from Singh that I can remember reading. But that is okay, because Ashwini is broken enough for the pair of them. He is an older vampire, and awesome as hell. Once Janvier found his Ashwini, he knew he wasn’t willing to live without her. And so he infuriated her as his courtship ritual. And it works. Bravo, Janvier! He is fun, and he is Ash’s Janvier.
Ashwini is going to go insane. She knows it, she is just waiting down the biological clock. Her entire female family lineage has gone insane before taking their own lives, and she is about to hit the age when it happens. Ashwini knows there is no stopping it. That is why she doesn’t want to get too close to Janvier. Which makes my heart ache with grief because they are perfect for each other.
Yet Janvier breaks down her walls, anyway. And it is the cutest, most adorable relationship ever. Once they start, they make the most out of every single minute. I adore these two. They are perfect for each other!
Archangel’s Shadows takes place after the Battle over New York City. There is a lot to clean up, still. But when a woman is found dessicated, just like what happened when Lijuan fed on her army to power up, the Tower suspects something sinister. In an investigation that takes them all across the city, Archangel’s Shadows has Ashwini and Janvier investigating what might prove to weaken a city that has already been put through war.
I just really love this book.
