This tag centers around the series The Tarot Sequence by KD Edwards, the first book is The Last Sun and the sequel, The Hanged Man, will be out on December 17th, 2019 – so excited! You don’t have to have read The Last Sun to do this tag, although I do highly encourage you to pick up the book if you haven’t yet, it’s so much fun. I recently read it and loved the hell out of it and my review will be up soon.
This tag has been created by #TeamDeath. Thanks to Lisa @ Way Too Fantasy for putting together this tag, and Tammy @ Books, Bones & Buffy, Dianthaa @ Dianthaa Dabbles, Matty @Mattyfp1 who helped. This is such a fun tag to be a part of. When you fill this out, please remember to link back to the person who tagged you and to give credit to the folks above. Thanks!
RUNE SAINT JOHN, LORD SUN
“Walk down the wrong street in this city and you could be gutted for your shoelaces. You could have a dagger stuck in your eye because you used the wrong adverb. The inside of a person’s head is a deep, dark place…”
A BOOK THAT LEFT YOU A LITTLE BROKEN ON THE INSIDE
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell
I’m going to amend “a little broken” to “a lot broken”, because The Sparrow is designed to make you hurt and break inside. You know from the very first pages that it is a tragedy, you know exactly how everything is going to end. Yet it still makes you hope that it won’t completely rip your heart out. It will.
“Don’t smile at me,” Brand said. “You’re still a dumb-ass.”
A BOOK THAT IS LIKE YOUR (SNARKY) BEST FRIEND
Elemental Legacy by Elizabeth Hunter
When I read, I become the characters, and there are none better to become than Benjamin and Tenzin (which I cannot separate in my head at all, and they collectively come together to be Benzin. Forever and always). These two have the best rapport and they are super snark with each other. They’re the best friends in the world, even when they’re getting on each others nerves. Their chemistry is amazing. The next book comes out in a little over a week and I’m practically vibrating waiting.
“Do not put holes in my walls, Tenzin.”
“You told me I could bring my weapons if I moved out here with you.”
“You can hang and display some of them. Properly. With brackets mounted by an actual contractor. Not random nails pounded into my walls, Tiny. Put the hammer down.”
She flew up and grabbed the dagger out of the ceiling, then landed on the Persian rug and brushed away the plaster dust. “I don’t have a hammer. I have a knife.” She looked up. “And the hole in the ceiling isn’t even noticeable from the floor.”
“What hole in the ceiling?”
“I suppose I can come to London, but can you have someone hang my stuff up while we’re gone?” An idea struck her. “Cara, can you help me with that?”
“What hole, Tenzin? There wasn’t a hole in the ceiling when I left.”
Cara said, “What can I help you with?”
“Can you find someone to hang up my weapons while I’m in London?”
“What hole are you talking about, Tenzin?”
He said, only a little shakily, “Quinn told me to pass along the warning. I’m not sure what rosy future Quinn prefers to see, but in the one he likes best, you and Brand are dear to him.”
A BOOK FEATURING A PROPHECY
Theirs Not to Reason Why by Jean Johnson
Quinn is mine and you can’t have him. And part of the reason I love him so dearly is because he has the exact same powers as one of my favourite characters from one of my favourite series: Ia from Theirs Not to Reason Why. Both characters can see the future – but not just one future, they can see multiple threads of the future and calculate the probabilities something will occur. Only, Ia has the slider for “duty” slid all the way up to 100% and Quinn is allowed to just have fun and be himself and have the life I wish Ia was allowed to have 😭😭😭. I will kidnap Quinn and take him for my own!
“Max is fucking flooding me with texts.”
“I need to do laundry. Is it okay if I try to fix the washer machine? Oops, I didn’t fix the washer machine, where are the towels? I used up all the towels. Is it okay if I eat a Devil Dog? Oops, I ate all the Devil Dogs.”
“He ate my Devil Dogs?”
A BOOK FEATURING A FOUND FAMILY
Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire
This entire novella series is about finding your place to belong. Your home. Your people. It is heartbreaking and and it is beautiful. Everyone just wants to belong.
He finally said, “You interest me, Hero. I’m fairly sure you saved my life and a simple thank you seems so small. I don’t know whether I should pay you handsomely, or invite you into the shower with me.”
A BOOK THAT GETS EXCITING HALFWAY THROUGH
Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O’Keefe
Velocity Weapon, 100%. In a book that is defined by twists and turns, the twist at the halfway mark of the book is unbelievable. Even if you know it is coming, you aren’t prepared to actually have it happen. And from that twist, everything takes off. If I didn’t love it for the AI, I would love it for the twists.
Her frost magic rose, forming shining rivulets of ice above the veins of her hand.
A BOOK THAT LEFT YOU COLD
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden
It takes place in Russia. Frequently during winter. It gets cooold in that series.
For a moment–just a moment–there was an expression on his face that I entirely mistook for pride, only wondering in hindsight if maybe it had been triumph.
A BOOK FEATURING A MENTOR
Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff
Mercurio is mentor and father figure you always wanted. Gruff, rough around the edges. But always there for you, trying his best to help you succeed. He isn’t perfect, but he has that awesome factor going for him.
Lady Justice’s eyes were not normal. I’d heard this before.
They shifted and changed, their shape and color stolen from nearby memories. Even more unnerving was my impluasible recognition of all the variations.
A BOOK WITH A SINISTER SECRET
The Gray House by Mariam Petrosyan
There are so many questions in this book. What’s going on? What’s that? Why are they always talking in riddles? But the biggest question of all is: What the hell happened during the previous graduation, and why are the teachers so terrified?
So, that was a lot of fun, and somehow much more difficult to put together than I expected! I hope you enjoyed this. My fellow #TeamDeath members are all tagged and anyone else who wants to join in because I get anxious about tagging people! When filling this out, try to tag 3-5 folks to keep it going.
