Dina Demille may run the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, but she caters to a very particular kind of guest… the kind that no one on Earth is supposed to know about. Guests like a former intergalactic tyrant with an impressive bounty on her head, the Lord Marshal of a powerful vampire clan, and a displaced-and-superhot werewolf; so don’t stand too close, or you may be collateral damage.
But what passes for Dina’s normal life is about to be thrown into chaos. First, she must rescue her long-distant older sister, Maud, who’s been exiled with her family to a planet that functions as the most lawless penal colony since Botany Bay. Then she agrees to help a guest whose last chance at saving his civilization could bring death and disaster to all Dina holds dear. Now Gertrude Hunt is under siege by a clan of assassins. To keep her guests safe and to find her missing parents, Dina will risk everything, even if she has to pay the ultimate price. Though Sean may have something to say about that!
“Did you know Draziri taste like chicken?” I asked.
Sean glanced at me, as if not sure if I was okay. “I had no idea.”
“Orro told me,” I told him. “We’re besieged by murderous poultry.”
This was so good on multiple levels. Clean Sweep set up the series and Sweep in Peace showcased the awesome things Dina could do, but One Fell Sweep felt like it took all those pieces and made this into a real story.
Throughout this series, Dina has had two goals. The first of which is to protect and help the guests of her Inn, however that protection or help may present itself. This is her calling. But her true mission, the one that started her on this path, was the fact that Dina’s parents, and their inn, went missing and she is trying to find them.
Finally that information may be within her grasp. The hiru are an alien race hunted to near extinction by another group who have declared the hiru heretical to their religion. The hiru have scraped together everything they have left to pay to get one question answered by the most knowledgeable source in the known universe. They have asked Dina for sanctuary, and thus they have asked her help help to end this slaughter against them. If she does this, they have offered up a prize worthy of many riches: Dina can have the second question they were offered with their riches. Which she can use to help find her parents.
It is a hard prize to give up, but Dina is willing to for the safety of her Inn and her guests. Which include her sister and niece, after Dina had to rescue them early in the book. That is until the hiru’s enemy makes her angry. Now Dina is in it to win it.
One Fell Sweep just ticks all the right boxes. It has a story that hits emotionally while also being action packed. Dina has support in the way of friends and, for the first time, family. It has Dina’s adorable niece growling at a full grown vampire adult, Arland. But it also advances the story for the series at the same time. And even adds a mysterious new element, as well. I really enjoyed this book.
